Gumroad charges no monthly fee, but it keeps 10% + 50¢ of every direct sale and 30% of sales through its Discover marketplace. If you sell physical products, a flat-priced store usually costs less once you're past a few hundred dollars a month. For physical goods with 0% taken from your sales, look at LotsStore, Big Cartel or Ecwid. If most of what you sell is downloads, Payhip is the closer fit.
I've put LotsStore first, then five more that sell physical products. All five can also sell downloads, and I note how where it matters. I opened every vendor's own pages on 22 October 2026 and read the fee rows, not the headlines. Prices are in US dollars, monthly first, then the per-month price billed yearly where the vendor shows one. Sources are at the end.
What Gumroad charges, and what you get for it
From Gumroad's pricing page, checked on 22 October 2026:
- No monthly fee. "Unlike other platforms, Gumroad doesn't charge you a monthly fee."
- 10% + $0.50 per transaction on sales through your profile or direct links.
- 30% per transaction when a new customer finds you through Gumroad's Discover marketplace.
- Taxes handled. Gumroad says it has handled its sellers' tax obligations since 1 January 2025, collecting tax where it has obligations as merchant of record.
- Built for digital. The page lists digital products, ebooks, courses, tutorials and memberships.
That's a fair deal when you're starting out: nothing to pay until you sell, and tax off your plate. The fee is a share of every sale, though, so it grows with you. On $2,000 a month in direct sales across 40 orders, Gumroad keeps $220.
Gumroad alternatives at a glance

What each one keeps on $2,000 a month
A fictional maker, Moth & Lantern Press, sells $2,000 a month across 40 orders. Here's what each platform keeps in a month, using the plan that covers the catalog, before payment processing:
| Platform and plan | Monthly price | Fee on $2,000 in sales | Total kept by the platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gumroad, direct sales | $0 | $200 + 40 × $0.50 | $220 |
| Payhip Free | $0 | 5% = $100 | $100 |
| Payhip Plus | $29 | 2% = $40 | $69 |
| Shopify Basic, Shopify Payments | $39 ($29 yearly) | 0% | $39 ($29 yearly) |
| Ecwid Venture | $35 ($29 yearly) | 0% | $35 ($29 yearly) |
| Big Cartel Platinum | $15 | 0% | $15 |
| LotsStore Starter | $12 ($10 yearly) | 0% | $12 ($10 yearly) |
The cheapest row depends on what you sell. Big Cartel and Ecwid also take 0%, and Ecwid's $5 Starter costs less than any paid plan here if you have 10 products or fewer.
1. LotsStore: physical products, 0% of your sales, paid straight to you
This is the one I built. LotsStore gives you a store that looks established on your own domain and pays you directly into your own account. We take 0% of your sales, and every plan has every feature.
- Made for physical products. Products with variants (sizes, colours), categories and collections, stock per variant with a low-stock view, and CSV import and export. You set your own shipping zones and rates and ship with any carrier, adding a tracking number and link to each order. You accept each order before it goes ahead, then fulfil and refund from the dashboard.
- Downloads: LotsStore doesn't deliver files automatically after purchase. If most of what you sell is digital, Payhip or one of the others below is the better fit, and a maker selling prints and a PDF pattern can run both.
- The money never passes through us. Connect your own Stripe account (in the countries Stripe supports) or Razorpay account (for businesses registered in India), take UPI to your own UPI ID, or take orders on WhatsApp and settle with the customer directly. With Stripe, shoppers pay on Stripe's own checkout and the money lands in your Stripe balance (how to connect Stripe). Your provider charges its normal processing fee; we add nothing.
- Unlimited products, orders, customers and teammates on every plan, so a growing catalog never pushes you up a tier.
- Prices: Starter $12 a month for 1 store, Pro $29 for 3 stores, Business $79 for 10 stores. Billed yearly: $120, $290 or $790, two months free. Without a plan, a store is $15 a month from LotsTech Credits. New accounts get 15,000 free credits, valid 90 days, no card: about a month of one store.
- For agencies and brands with several shops: Pro and Business cover several stores under one plan, each store connects its own payment account, and each client gets the role they need.
Plans are on the pricing page. If you're weighing it against the other 0% platforms, I compared them side by side in LotsStore vs Big Cartel and LotsStore vs Ecwid.
2. Payhip: the closest match for digital products
Payhip is the most Gumroad-like option here: a store for creators, with the fee shrinking as you pay for a plan.
- Plans: Free Forever with a 5% transaction fee, Plus at $29 a month with 2%, Pro at $99 a month with no transaction fee. Every plan lists all features, unlimited products and unlimited revenue. No annual price is shown on the pricing page.
- What you can sell: digital downloads (ebooks, software, templates, video, music), online courses, memberships, 1:1 coaching, and physical products with inventory.
- Taxes: Payhip says it collects, reports and remits digital EU and UK VAT and US and Canadian sales tax on your behalf.
- Processing: PayPal and Stripe still charge their standard rates on all plans.
- How it compares: for a downloads-first creator, Payhip's tax handling and course tools are real strengths. For a store of physical products, LotsStore takes 0% from $12 a month, where Payhip is 0% at $99.
3. Big Cartel: 0% for makers, physical and digital
Big Cartel is built for makers and musicians, and its pricing page says it plainly: no hidden fees, and "we never take a cut".
- Plans: Gold is free with up to 5 products. Platinum is $15 a month or $144 a year, with up to 50 products, a custom domain and "physical and digital products". Diamond is $30 a month or $288 a year, with up to 500 products, abandoned cart recovery, scheduled product drops and Zapier.
- Payments: cards, PayPal (including PayPal Credit and Venmo), Afterpay and more.
- Where it's strong: a genuinely free start, digital products from Platinum, sales tax autopilot, and shipping label printing with up to 90% off shipping.
- How it compares: both of us take 0%. Big Cartel caps products at 5, 50 and 500 by plan; LotsStore has no product caps, and Pro and Business cover 3 or 10 stores under one plan.
4. Ecwid: 0% and the cheapest paid start
Ecwid (by Lightspeed) says it doesn't charge "any setup or transaction fees on any of our plans". It runs as a standalone store or inside a site you already have.
- Plans: Starter $5 a month, up to 10 products. Venture $35 ($29 billed yearly), up to 100 products plus e-goods. Business $65 ($49 yearly), up to 2,500 products. Unlimited $149 ($119 yearly), unlimited products.
- Digital: e-goods (downloadable products) from Venture.
- Payments: more than 70 providers, including PayPal and Stripe.
- How it compares: Ecwid's $5 Starter is cheaper than any paid plan on this list, for 10 products and no downloads. To sell digital goods you need Venture at $35. LotsStore has no product caps at $12 and is built for physical products.
5. Shopify: the full toolkit, digital through a free app
Shopify is the biggest and most complete store platform. It sells physical products out of the box and digital products through its own free app.
- Plans: Basic $39 a month ($29 billed yearly), Grow $105 ($79), Advanced $399 ($299). Plus starts at $2,300 a month.
- The fee: 0% with Shopify Payments. With any other provider, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. Shopify Payments online card rates start at 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic.
- Digital: Shopify's free Digital Products app sends download links after purchase, with access limits you set.
- Where it's strong: unlimited products, apps for almost anything, and in-person selling.
- How it compares: with Shopify Payments, Shopify's 0% is real. With another payment provider, the 2% on Basic comes off every sale. LotsStore takes 0% with whichever of its providers you connect, at $12 instead of $39.
6. Squarespace: a full website, with a fee on digital content
Squarespace is a design-led website builder with a store built in. It has two separate fees, so read both rows.
- Plans: Basic $25 a month ($19 billed yearly), Core $39 ($29), Plus $65 ($49), Advanced $139 ($99). Unlimited products on every plan.
- Store sales fee: 2% on Basic, 0% from Core.
- Digital content and memberships fee: 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus, 0% on Advanced.
- Processing: Squarespace Payments card rates from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core.
- How it compares: Squarespace is a good pick if you want a full website around the shop. For digital products the fee only reaches 0% on Advanced at $139 a month ($99 yearly).
How to choose
- You sell physical products, or mostly physical: LotsStore, Big Cartel or Ecwid for 0% of your sales. LotsStore if you want unlimited products and your money straight into your own account; Big Cartel for a free start; Ecwid for the lowest price under 10 products.
- You sell downloads, courses or memberships: Payhip. Its fee drops from 5% to 0% as you move up, and it handles VAT and sales tax on digital goods.
- You sell both and want one store: Big Cartel (digital from Platinum), Ecwid (e-goods from Venture) or Shopify with its free Digital Products app.
- You're an agency moving client shops off Gumroad: look at stores per plan. LotsStore Business covers 10 client stores for $79 a month, and each store pays its owner directly. More in LotsStore for agencies.

Manage your store from ChatGPT or Claude
Everything in LotsStore works in the dashboard. If you already use ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant, you can connect it and manage the store in plain words. It works with the AI agent you already use. Moving from Gumroad, for example:
Add my three art prints to the Moth & Lantern store as products with A4 and A3 variants, $25 and $40, 20 in stock each, in a new "Prints" collection.
Every change shows in your dashboard. Here's how to connect your assistant.
